THE ONE TRUE CHURCH

Jesus said to His disciples: “I AM the way; I AM the truth and life; nobody can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14: 6)

A little later He said: “ When He the Spirit of Truth has come, He will teach you all the truth.” (John 15: 26)

We recently celebrated the Feast of Pentecost, recalling to our minds the extraordinary miracle that transformed the weak, fearful, uncertain disciples into strong, fearless, sure witnesses of the Truth of the Good News, and as such they went forth to spread this “Gospel” to all the world.

They went forth with the Truth. They went forth with the one Truth. There were not and are not several “truthes”. There is one Truth, One True Church. The only way to salvation was and is to join this One True Church.

In these days of utter confusion, Catholics could do little better than to read and meditate the words of the Acts of the Apostles.

On the day of Pentecost there were 120 Jews gathered together in the Upper Room (“Cenacle” – Place of the First Mass/ Last Supper/ Passover Meal) (Acts 1:15, ff.)

Three thousand Jews were added to this number the same day (Acts 1: 41).

Once the Gospel had been proclaimed to the Jews, the mission to Gentiles began, especially after the conversion of Saul (St. Paul). The Apostles, fired by the Holy Spirit went to the ends of then known world proclaiming the Good News as Our Lord had commanded them (Mt. 28:18ff.)

These Apostles, all of whom (except St. John) died the most terrible deaths rather than to deny the Truth, belonged to the One True Church. They taught that outside it there was no salvation.

Hear the words of Saint Peter to the Rulers of the Jews: “You crucified Jesus Christ, the Nazarene, and God raised him from the dead…. Salvation is not to be found elsewhere; this alone of all the names has been appointed to men as the one by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4: 10ff.)

These early Christians taught that there was no salvation through the pagan gods (demons). They taught that the Jewish religion was completed in Christ. The long awaited Messiah had come. Now the true Jews were those who professed Him, Jesus, as Saviour and God.

Many voices are heard today claiming to possess the truth. It is claimed by some that the Baptists owe their foundation to Saint John the Baptist. The Lutherans, founded by an immoral and foul-mouthed ex-monk, claim the truth. So do the Anglicans (Episcopalians), founded by King Henry of England, a murderer and womaniser. Likewise the Calvinists (Presbyterians, Evangelicals, etc.), founded by Jean Calvin a sodomite. The King James Bible which links together millions of heretics was sponsored by “Queen” James. Jimmy Swaggart, James Bakker, Billy Graham, etc., claim the “truth” as do so many other weird man-made religions: Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, Seventh Day Adventists, Christian Science, to name but a few. There are countless thousands more.

All these false religions were founded by men (and women), certainly not Saints and often of corrupt lives many hundreds of years after the Apostolic Age.

The Catholic Church is the only true church not to have been founded by just a man. It was founded by Jesus Christ Himself:

“You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it”.
(Mt. 16: 18)

Jesus promised that the gates of hell would never prevail against His Church. Christ Himself promised that His Church would be guided by the Spirit of Truth.

We Catholics possess the One Truth. We are members of the One True Church. Let us pray and work to share this Truth with those around us!

Sincerely in Our Lord & Lady,

The Reverend Father Timothy A. Hopkins, B.A., M.Th., P.G.C.E.
